From AdAge.
Second Life was 2007′s most over-hyped emerging media trend in Online Marketing.
That’s according to 57% of the audience members polled at the Ad Age Digital Conference session, “What’s Worth Your Attention in 2008.”
“Second Life has become a quagmire for marketers,” said Steve Rubel, senior VP-director of Insights, Edelman Digital, and the panel’s moderator.
So how do marketers avoid falling into the same trap this year?
Facebook?

Facebook is number one for me. All hype and no substance. Their advertising platform (Beacon) was a failure, and they still do not have a viable revenue model.
I have strong doubts over their ability to build a successful advertising platform. Facebook is a social network, not a search engine. People are there to socialise, as opposed to a search engine where they are actively seeking information.

Mate, Facebook – bogus! Serious, I cant see what big buzz about it. Bad quality data, annoying …

Posted by Lucio | March 26, 2008, 5:09 amFacebook has great data, but no way to use it without completely pissing off their users. It’s a difficuly predicament for them.
And yes… annoying is an understatement. I call it Spambook these days. The next person to throw a sheep at me is going to cop a punch in the face when I run into them… :)
Posted by James Duthie | March 28, 2008, 12:14 amJames, do you really think Facebook has great data?! What great data? Name, email + a bunch of crap applications?
Google, Yahoo or even LinkedIn has better quality data than them.

Posted by Lucio | April 2, 2008, 2:17 amFavourite movies, favourite books, favourite past times, favourite authors, favourite sports teams… etc etc. People volunteer all sorts of personal preference data on their Facebook profile. I consider that targeting gold.
But they have to move beyond the crap display advertising model (which they tried to do unsuccessfully with Beacon).
Posted by James Duthie | April 2, 2008, 3:45 amHummmm……I’m still not convinced that sort of data is relevant.
1) Theres a Gap, I mean, theres a enormous difference from what people really wants and what people will consume;
2) Let’s assume thta the information is reliable. If they cant use/explore, what does it matter?!

Anyway I joined facebook. Just don’t expect me to put any time into building my network – I like my gardens without walls.
