5 video you want to watch to understand Social Media

June 5, 2010

There are so many videos online about Social Media and Internet, but which ones are really worth the time of watching?

Advice is a commodity, but usable, not practical, instruction is scarce.

Much of the information online is helpful for inspiring creativity and direction. But, it’s up to each one of us to get the answers through the hard work necessary to see how any of this applies to our unique challenges and opportunities that face us today and tomorrow.

“We have to become the very experts in our space that we once sought to answer our own questions” (thanks, Brian Solis ).

This is my list with 5 (actually 8) videos I learnt something about marketing, social media and creativity.

Social Media Revolution

- The must see Social Media video for Social Media “experts”

Released in August of last year and already 1.8 Million views later, Social Media Revolution is arguably one of the best social media videos ever. Created by Erik Qualman (@equalman on Twitter) of Socialnomics, the original video is an energetic and exciting look into the statistics and growth of social media.

Seth Godin on Tribes

Seth Godin argues the Internet has ended mass marketing and revived a human social unit from the distant past: tribes. Founded on shared ideas and values, tribes give ordinary people the power to lead and make big change. He urges us to do so.

How to Create a Fan Community

Spike Jones from Worth of Mouth Brains of Fire explains how to create an astonishingly successful fan club.
Spike explained how to launch a movement, how to involve your fans early, and how to make it something that can last forever (even after your budget runs out).
A few of his big ideas:

* It’s not about campaigns, it’s about movements. Movements have a beginning and no end. While campaigns are an on-off switch, movements are volume dials with no zero. The Fiskars fan community is a movement.
* Find the passion conversation. Help fans talk about their passion, not about your products. For Fiskars, it’s not about scissors, it’s about what you do with scissors.
* Movements have inspiring, passionate leaders. When looking for the fans that would lead this community, Brains On Fire didn’t look for the people with the most followers on Twitter, they looked for the people who were most passionate about crafting. As Spike says, passion can’t be created, but influence can.

Clay Shirky: How social media can make history
Clay Shirky shows how Facebook, Twitter and Online Channels/Tools help citizens in repressive regimes to report on real news, bypassing censors (however briefly). The end of top-down control of news is changing the nature of politics.

BONUS:
Given I’m writing/posting about Videos – 3 other videos not necessarily about Social Media but will most definitely help you to think.
