Just another day at work. A conversion story

August 23, 2009

John calls our office, “Hi, I’ve heard you guys work with Internet Marketing.”

“Yes, we do”, answers Jeff.

“ I’ve got a problem. I have an ecommerce website, the www……com.au and I’m getting a bit of traffic but I can’t understand why I can’t get past my 10% conversion. I’ve generated loads of links with Company X, I’ve done some SEO, and I’ve even hired some young gun Social Media guy, but nothing seems to be working.”

“Can we look at your Analytics data?”

“Of course – I’ll email you the log in details.”

Days later…..

“Hi John. Jeff from The Online Circle here. We’ve spent some time looking at your analytics data. Can I ask you, how often do you look at your analytics?”

“ Every day.” exclaimed John. “Every single day I check the number of visitors, conventions, keywords, etc.”

“Okay, that’s a good start. Have you ever checked what browser and screen resolution your users use?”

“No. Does it matter?”

“Yes, it can matter a lot depending on the circumstances.  If you consider that most of your visitors use 1024×768 and your website is set up for 800×600 px, you might understand that most of them are not seeing your call to actions, security buttons and shopping cart.”

“Are you serious?”

“Absolutely serious John. Unfortunately these things are rarely as simple as they seem and fully maximising your online efforts is likely to involve a range of things – onsite and off.”

“Ok. So what do I do about this right now?”

“Ask your designer to change the placement of these key message points”.

Two weeks later 37% improvement

Can you explain why users with 1024 x 768 can’t see the complete design with calls to action created for 800 x 600 ( the reverse is true)?
10% conversion is a pretty damn good conversion rate if you are looking at uniques to purchasing customers.

Hey Rob,
Techically when you are setting up a website, you need to consider that users have different set ups. If you want your layout to be resized based on the client’s browser width you need to make sure the Horizontal Alignment is either left or right (sometimes center).
If you decide for right alignment, the information on the left side will be compromised and vice-versa. That was what was happening to the website.
Around 10% conversion, the product is around digital distribution and really low margin, even though 10% sounds sexy, it wans’t
Cheers
Lucio
