For any SEO or webmaster looking to score some natural high profile links there is one term that is equivalent to the Holy Grail, and that is Link Bait. Link baiting is an art form of its own, a way to make other people voluntarily link to you. A way to get hundreds or even thousands of organic free links without having to move a finger once the link bait is up, but creating a good link bait that will achieve those results is not easy at all.

Linkable content

Link Baits can include everything from an well written article or a resource to an free product or image like an inforgraphic. But not everyone knows how to create design inforgraphics, not everyone has a product that advertises itself, and no everyone can write a master piece worthy of citing and referencing every time your subject is mentioned. Like we said, link baiting is an art form and explaining how to achieve the mastery of that art is a long process and not made for everyone, but to get your closer to that goal here are a few tips to pay attention to, starting with hooks and types of link baits you can use.

Link Bait Hooks

Link bait techniques are often called “hooks.”  There are different hooks as follows:

*News hooks provide the latest news and gain popularity as the news spreads through social media. They require timing and already present exposure.

*Information hooks give information that is valuable to the reader. These include tricks, tips, and personal experience. This is the most common link bait there is, mostly made out of Top 100 lists or similar articles.

*Evil hooks use negative content to gain attention. This means saying derogatory remarks about a celebrity, website, or another blogger to get readers to click or plain old playing the controversy routine, not suited for everyone though.

*Humor hooks tell a joke or other funny story. These can also include cartoons or funny pictures. These often go viral fast on social media websites. We like to laugh, so this is a good way to approach your link bait.

*Widget hooks use a tool or badge that other webmasters can use to embed into their site. These widgets will link back to the creator. Requires some technical knowledge or a budget, but can definitely work to spread the word and some link loving.

*Tool hooks, like widget hooks, provide a tool for other sites to use and link back to the original site. You probably use one or several, like embed videos or search fields, keyword density checkers, you name it.

*Curated hooks provide content that links to other sites or blogs when using them as a resource. This is very similar to Information Hooks but the difference is that these only rely on citing and referencing others, something like a well know roundup.

Elements of Link Baits Not To Be Forgotten

Although link baits can appear in many forms, they often contain many of the same elements. There is always a strong headline to grab the visitor’s attention. The link bait must also contain extraordinary information in order to get the reader attention and keep him there and in most cases there are visuals such as photos or charts that also gain interest of the reader.

It can be easy, but it can be tough as nails. But in some cases people create a link bait without even realizing it, so just concentrate on high quality content and you can create a solid link bait without realizing it.

  1. Great article! It would be great if you could provide some of the best examples for each one of these hooks in the next post.

  2. Infographics is a great way, however like anything they gets popular they are being done to death now.

A good information hook is running something like Xenu on a target site & finding broken links then emailing the webmaster with a link to replace anything that’s broken (to one of your sites of course).
