Hey smart guy, is everybody spying on you.

In 2007 , Australian companies will lose more than A$1 billion dollars with Office netslackers according to the Federal Government.

Worldwide studies suggest employees spend about a fifth of their work shifts engaging in personal activities, and their favorite time waster – Internet.

Employees who cyberslack have been shown to spend most of their time on the following actions:

1) Emailing (not related to work);

2) Managing Finances or shopping online;

3) Watching Videos (Youtube, MetaCafe);

4) Social Networks – Facebook, Myspace and Orkut;

5) Looking for another job;

6) Playing online games;

7) Catching up on celebrity gossip on websites as PereZHilton;

That’s the good new for the companies, more and more softwares have been released aiming online protection and behavior management.

Bad news for the users, as technology advances easier is to track your online footprint.

When you visit websites (most commercial), they embed a little text called “Cookie” on your computer. Usually Cookies do not represent big problem, but it’s not secret that some advertising networks have been tracking people by name as they go from site to site and also yous snoopy employer might scan your computer and find out which sites you’ve visited.

Search Engines as Google, Yahoo, MSN all use cookies and record your browsed websites. Did you know it? And more than this, crossing a list of search terms, Google can even produce a list of people who searched for determined term, identify their IP and ….

Softwares that crawl keyboards searching for unusual activities from users are already part of the IT arsenal to contain employees extra online activity.

Even so with the warnings you want to go ahead and access remember to always clean up Cache, Cookies, and Saved Passwords (FireFox – on Tools ->Clear Private data ) – (IE – Tools -> General -> Delete Cookies, Files and History).

Even so if you still want to get some fun on the Internet, below some nice office-dedicated websites:

- Post and rate quotes using overheardintheoffice.com
