A popular discussion in the office today has been around Twitter’s new interface design and its move to attract a wider audience.

Twitter yesterday released a new page design that incorporate a friendlier user interface, which offers more opportunities for brands to promote themselves. The new Twitter design offers brands the capabilities for a cleaner and more emotive look and feel, with the potential to appeal to an audience previously intimidated by the Twitter format.

The major layout changes for all users – now consistent across web and mobile – include moving the timeline to the right hand side of the page, and allowing media to be displayed within tweets, rather than confined to an often messy URL and then redirecting users from the timeline.

The new look standard Twitter page for The Online Circle client Cadbury Dairy Milk Australia

At first look for brands, the most useful changes seem to be in the ability to promote rich media tweets to the top of the timeline and take advantage of an increased header presenting a banner-style space. The addition of rich media within the tweets, especially the promoted tweet which will fully display the content, allow for a better display of brand personality and presence. Interesting to note, this brings Twitter more in line with current offerings of Facebook and Google+.

The new look branded Twitter page, for 1 of 21 partners involved in the launch: Coca-Cola.

The new features for brand pages were released in partnership with 21 brands including Coke and Disney. Twitter state “We will slowly roll out enhanced profile pages to a wider audience of brands in the coming months”. At this stage the changes seem to be only available randomly once the application is downloaded, even with logging in and out.

More info about the changes to the interface:

Twitter services are now arranged intuitively across 4 sections: Home, Connect, Discover, and You. Home is simple and similar to the original design. Connect makes follows, mentions, retweets and favourites more accessible. Discover is a new customised section that ‘learns’ about users search habits: collating content of potential interest to users under hashtag search terms used prior. You is the new profile page, that more clearly displays lists, favourites, follows, interests and rich media.

We’ll keep you updated with further opportunities for brands. For now, download the app (iOS or Android) for your new Twitter, and read more about the standard changes: http://fly.twitter.com/#

Twitter recently announced that users would start to see Promoted Tweets within their Twitter stream or “Timelines”. Previously, promoted tweets from brands and advertisers only appeared in Twitter search results, meaning many promoted tweets were never seen.

Twitter wants to make “Promoted Tweets” more valuable and attractive to advertisers. Sponsored or promoted tweets will now appear in a user’s timeline if they already follow the account that has paid for the tweet.

The advertiser or account sending out the Promoted Tweet will be charged on a pay-per-click payment model, not a cost-per-impression model.

The Tweet will appear at the top, or near the top of the user’s timeline when they first login on any given day, ensuring followers get eyes on any special deal, or exclusive content that account has to offer. After the user logs in, the promoted tweet will assimilate with the rest of the user timeline, gradually being pushed down the stream as new tweets are received.

Users will apparently be given the option to remove promoted tweets from their steam one-by-one, with the option to remove being found alongside the options to Reply and Retweet within the individual Tweet.

This means social engagement with the company will occur even if it is to remove it from their feed.

Many of Twitter’s blue chip accounts will be the first to have access to this new form of promoted tweet, companies such as Dell, Gatorade, JetBlue, Microsoft Xbox, Red Bull and Starbucks are expected to begin utilising the feature over the next few weeks.

Twitter will also display promoted Tweets from non-profit organizations that Twitter users follow as a public service to the community.

Google recently launched the beta app and website for their forthcoming photo sharing service, Photovine. This new iPhone app and social media service will finally put them in direct competition with other fun and popular apps like Instagram and Picplz. Will it become the next big thing in photo sharing? I’m not so sure.

While info on Photovine’s development direction is limited, it appears it will have minimal to no connection with Google’s recent Social Media platform, Google+. If this is true, I believe it to be a huge strategic error.

One of, if not the most important features of killer apps like Instagram and Picplz are their ability to post content simultaneously across a near baffling number of social media services. In just a few seconds I can take a photo, add a cool filter, caption, tags, and geo-locations then post it on my Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Flickr, and Foursquare.

This simple and quick functionality I believe is an important reason why so many Social Media platforms can survive and even thrive despite being in direct competition.

If it becomes more difficult to manage content on one of these social media platforms than others, there is a good chance it will fail as users are less likely to manually update multiple services or completely ditch the ones they are currently entrenched in. Right now, it’s Google+ and even the yet to be released Photovine that should be worried.

If Google can’t even properly interconnect their own social media services or support their own operating system (No Photovine Android app has been announced), how can we expect them to do so across our favourite 3rd party social media clients or photo storage clouds?

As mentioned, the Photovine app is currently ONLY available on the iPhone with no Android app officially announced. This could be a smart strategy, targeting the most engaged and abundant audience for their service, however should the success of this one seemingly independent product really be put above the brand’s overall image as a company that follows through and supports its products/users long-term.

Whatever they do they better do it soon, because rumour has it Facebook will soon be announcing their branded Photo-sharing app. If true, this could for some users tip the scale of useful feature differences between Facebook and Google+, negatively impacting the growth of Google’s fledgling platform.

So, how do you engage in Social Multimedia and do you have room for one more on your electronic grapevine?

Twitter is not the new kid on the block anymore. Data from Twiter usage is coming from bad to worse and the brand percepetion of Twitter is not helping at all.

73% of Twitter accounts have tweeted fewer than 10 times according to a new report from Barracuda Networks, a Web security company.

As of December 2009, only 21% of Twitter account holders were what Barracuda defines as “true users,” meaning someone who has at least 10 followers, follows at least 10 people and has tweeted at least 10 times.

Wired 40

In 2000, Wired published the Wired 40 — 40 companies that they said were engineering the new economy.

“A future of unprecedented growth lies ahead”.

Well, let’s pretend that we took their advice and invested $10,000 of our cash into those 40 companies. Where would we be now?

This is an exercise by Wired magazine…..

That $10,000 worth of stock in 2000 would carry a value of just $6,870.29 today. (There are some variables here — in some cases, we assumed you had sold your stock in, say, Enron, on the last day of trading, which is unlikely. This combines both worst- and best-case scenarios.) Think we stink as stock pickers? We’re not the only ones. The Nasdaq is valued at less than half of what it was in March 2000, when the dotcom crash began.

Big picture is good, but reality bites soon or later. The question is simple. How the $100million ill return?

This Month has been all about the integration of Search and Social Media.

First was Bing, announcing its deal with Twitter and Facebook, and now is Google with Twitter and more importantly with Google Social Search.

Google Social Search is an experimental feature that helps you find relevant public web content from people in your social circle, when you’re signed in to a Google Account.

For example, if I search for [ restaurants ], and restaurant reviews by one of my buddies may appear more prominently in my results.

You can join the Social Search experiment at http://www.google.com/experimental

It seems that there are no limits for the Black Eye Peas when it comes to Social Media.

The social media explosion started when a happy boy in an Apple Store, and various bizarre versions started to pop up.

On September 2009, 172 communication students at the University of Quebec at Montreal videotaped a lip dub video of the song, which was posted to YouTube the following day. Because of the video’s raw choreography it was able to be filmed in a single take. The video went immediately viral and gained over 1,300,000 views within two weeks. The video was featured on a CNN news report on October/2009.

Bang! The song was already number one on the charts and climbed directly to number one on Itunes with the most sold singles.

If that wasn’t enough, earlier this month Oprah had a Kickoff party for the 24th season of her Talk Show.

This was all launched by a unique performance by the Black Eyed Peas.

Black Eyed Peas altered the lyrics slightly for their hit single “I Gotta Feeling” to tribute Oprah in a big performance on the streets of Chicago.

What Oprah didn’t know was that the 21,000 fans were not just there to watch the kickoff, but to put on a show for Oprah.

So how did they managed to get 21,000 people together to dance in a perfect synchrony?

Answer: Social Media Strategy.

Phase 1 -

Without the show host’s knowledge, Peas star will.i.am teamed up with choreographers and the show producers to create a dance routine for the band’s “I Gotta Feeling” hit and then called on 800 fans using twitter and social media channels to help him execute the spectacle on TV.

The 800 were taught the moves.

AMAZINGLY everyone did it in such perfect unison.

1st Video – the training session

Phase 2 – After the first selection of dancers had their first session of training the dancers used their own contacts on Facebook, Twitter and other social media channel to engage more people

Video 2 – a more engaged crowd

Just before the show started all the previously trained dancers were dispersed into the crowd to quickly teach it to the rest of the people who became aware of the show through Social Media messages sent out by the dancers, B.E.P’s and Oprahs producers.

Result:

21,000 of Oprah’s biggest fans perform one of the biggest dances in the world to the Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling.”

Who said there was no way for the phonographic industry to ramp up sales and take their piece of revenue on social sharing websites?

Are they still seeing as a threat or is it a start of a new strategy?

The song has so far sold 3,000,000+ digital downloads in the United States, Internationally, “I Gotta Feeling” has become the Peas’ most successful single of their career, topping the charts in over fifteen countries so far.
