Breaking up relationships using online channels is a phenomenon that is growing, according to research by International Association for Relationship Research (IARR), with increasing numbers of people preferring to use e-mail, social networks on the Internet and SMS to end relationships with their partners.
More than 34% of the 5,000 americans who participated in the survey said they had ended the relationship by e-mail, 13% had changed their status on Facebook without notifying partners and 6% had unilaterally announced the news on Twitter.
Only 2% ended the relationship by text messages from mobile.
The rest had broken the outdated way through conversation face-to-face (38%) and telephone (8%).
“Finishing a relationship using online channels will become more common,” says Sean Wood, director of marketing service relationships DateTheUk for which the research was conducted. “It’s usually easier, faster and avoid any misunderstanding.”
